Four decades after its release, we’re finally able to hear a little more of the song “Every Breath You Take.”

The new box-set edition of the Police’s final album “Synchronicity” includes this demo version. It sounds noticeably different without Andy Summers’ familiar and catchy guitar line.

Sting’s initial demo of the song was done in October 1982 at London’s Utopia Studios. He used only a keyboard and drum machine.

He told The Independent:

“The tune itself is generic, an aggregate of hundreds of others, but the words are interesting… It sounds like a comforting love song, but I didn’t realize how sinister it is. I think I was thinking of Big Brother, surveillance and control.”

Andy Summers later came up with the track’s iconic guitar line.
