Election day is June 7, 2018.  Here’s a brief outline of everything you need to know about election day in London so you can make your vote count.

You Can Vote If:

• You are at least 18 years of age on election day

• You are a Canadian citizen

• You are a resident of Ontario

You Need To Bring:

To vote, you have  to bring one piece of ID with your name and current residential address. If you are on the Voters List, bring your Voter Information Card and ID. If you are not on the Voters List, bring one piece of identification that shows both your name and current residential address.

Where Do I Vote?

Your voting location is listed on the voter information card you got in the mail if you are on the Voters List.   If you can’t find that card, or you aren’t registered on the list don’t worry, you can still vote.  Click HERE and enter your postal code to find your location.   You can also find a list of your local candidates by following that link so you know who’s name to mark.

Who Do I Vote For?

That’s up to you!   If you aren’t familiar with the party platforms, McLean’s Magazine put together this Comprehensive Guide to the party platforms so you can figure out which one represents your views the best. Once you figure that out, look at the list of your riding candidates HERE and remember their name when you go to vote.

Don’t Like Your Options?  You Can Decline.

You can formally decline your vote in Ontario.  Section 53 of the Ontario Election Act, says: “An elector who has received a ballot and returns it to the deputy returning officer declining to vote, forfeits the right to vote and the deputy returning officer shall immediately write the word ‘declined’ upon the back of the ballot and preserve it to be returned to the returning officer and shall cause an entry to be made in the poll record that the elector declined to vote.” That decline goes on record.

What Can’t I Do Election Day?

Did you know it’s illegal to take a selfie while voting? Selfies with your ballot are not allowed because “it violates the secrecy of the vote,” according to Elections Ontario’s website, as does posting the picture on your socials.  Pictures have to be taken outside of the voting area.
