Everyone is buzzing about the changes made to the figure skating event for the 2018 version of the big winter sports festival we don’t sponsor so we can’t name. For the first time, figure skating music can now contain lyrics, and it’s been glorious. These are our favourite performances/song choices so far.

NOTE: Due to Olympic licensing restrictions, most of the videos below are from previous events where the skaters performed the same routine.

Canadian darlings Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir skate perfectly to classic rock medley!

What’s not to love? Our favourite local duo have captivated Canadians from coast to coast chose a particularly JACKtastic medley for their record-breaking score on Sunday. A remix of the Rolling Stones “Sympathy For The Devil”, The Eagles classic “Hotel California” and Santana’s “Oye Como Va” to be exact. It was a record-breaking performance and we give it a gold medal purely for their musical choices.

Paul Fentz of Germany skates to the “Game Of Thrones” theme!

Game of Thrones is the most popular show on television and is known for its impressive music, so it’s no surprise that one of the competitors chose to skate to music from the show. Germany’s Paul Fentz did just that and it was amazing! While it wasn’t enough for a medal, we think he deserves a spot on the Iron Throne nonetheless.

Shibutani siblings skate to Coldplay

The bronze winners from ice dance, the Shibutani siblings skated to Coldplay’s “Paradise”. While they weren’t quite on the level of Virtue and Moir, the contemporary music choice was refreshing and worked great with their routine.

France’s Chafik Besseghier gets down to Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight”!

Chafik Besseghier went unconventional with his song choice and skated to a medley of the Sugarhill Gang’s hip-hop classic “Rapper’s Delight” combined with French DJ group C2C’s “Down The Road”. He finished last but according to our music director Corbet, his song choice was “gold, gold, GOLD!”

The Force is Strong with Boyang Jin!

Boyang Jin finished fourth in the men’s competition but we think his song choice was medal worthy. Jin skated to a medley of songs from Star Wars, including the amazing “Cantina Theme”. Honestly, this is one of the last songs we thought someone would skate along to and Jin pulled it off like a true Jedi master!
