9 Things You Might Not Know About 'No Jacket Required'

Phil Collins owned the ’80s. His music was EVERYWHERE and he even showed up on our favourite TV shows (Miami Vice) and in the movies (Buster). For all his success that decade, nothing tops his 3rd solo record, No Jacket Required, which was released on January 25, 1985. In honour of the album that gave the world “Sussudio”, let’s take a look at 9 things you might not know about No Jacket Required.

1. Both Peter Gabriel and Sting performed backing vocals on the album.
2. It was Collins’ most commercially-successful album, selling over 25 million copies worldwide. It sold over 1 million copies in Canada alone!
3. Collins’ made up the word “Sussudio”. It is now the one word he hears the most from fans, and was the name of one of his daughter’s horses.
4. The album is named after an incident at The Pump Room restaurant in Chicago, Illinois. Phil went to eat with former Led Zeppelin vocalist Robert Plant but was denied entry because he did not meet the restaurant’s dress code of “jacket required”.
5. Collins was nominated in five categories at the 28th Annual Grammy Awards for the album. He won for Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Performance (Male), and Producer of the Year (with Hugh Padgham).
6. The “Sussudio” and “One More Night” videos were both shot at a London pub owned by British billionaire Sir Richard Branson!
7. Both “Take Me Home” and “Long Long Way to Go” were featured in separate episodes of the popular ’80s TV show, Miami Vice.
8. A successful 11 piece Phil Collins Tribute Band from the UK named themselves after the album.
9. Listen up Hulkamaniacs…. the final song on the album, “Take Me Home”,  was also the closing theme for WWF’s Saturday Night’s Main Event.
